I found this neat five-part article series on norse-mythology.org. It gives a general overview of how the runes came to be and their general meanings. It’s a pretty short read, so if you’re interested it’s definitely worth a click.

Part II: The Origins of the Runes

Part III: Runic Philosophy and Magic

here you go - as far as online sources goes, this is one of the more comprehensive ones on the Elder Futhark.
attention people who use runes (esp. the elder fuþark):

queerwitchery:

if you work with or have done research on the Elder Fuþark runes, you may have noticed that there are lots of variations on the names. & i mean LOTS, e.g.:

image

there are a couple of reasons for this:

  • HOWEVER, most actual runic inscriptions in the Elder Fuþark are actually in Proto-Norse, the intermediate stage between Proto-Indo-European and Old Norse. A lot of the discrepancies between the attested names & their names in other Germanic languages (i.e. Gothic and Old English) is due to this fact (Orðstírr has a good intro to Proto-Norse sounds especially re: runes)
  • modern English is missing many of the sounds and letters that existed in early Germanic languages, so variant spellings are different ways of rendering them in our limited 26-letter alphabet
  • many sources on runes come from magickal writings from many decades ago, and because language science is constantly evolving, so has our reconstruction of Proto-Germanic. thus, many of the names are based on outdated reconstructions.
  • most magickal writings on runes are not written by historical linguists who study ancient Germanic languages

luckily i regularly study & use Proto-Germanic, & based on our most recent & accurate reconstructions, the names for the Elder Fuþark would have probably taken the following forms (text in /slashes/ is IPA phonemic transcription; where names are different, this is due to differring names in the different attested langauges, or variation within Proto-Germanic dialects):

ᚠ    *fehu /ɸexu/ “wealth, cattle”

ᚢ    *ūruz /uːruz/ “aurochs”

ᚦ    *þurisaz /θurisɑz/ “giant, monster” OR  *þurnuz /θurnuz/ “thorn”

ᚷ    *gebō /ɣeβɔː/ “gift”

ᚹ    *wunjō /wunjɔː/ “joy”

ᛊ    *sōwulą /sɔːwulɑ̃/ OR *sōwilą /sɔːwilɑ̃/ “sun”

ᛏ    *tīwaz /tiːwɑz/ “the god *Tīwaz (Norse Týr, Anglo-Saxon Tíw > Tue[sday])”

ᛜ    *ingwaz /iŋʷgʷɑz/ “the god *Frawjaz (Norse Freyr, Anglo-Saxon Fréa)”

ᛞ    *dagaz /dɑɣɑz/ “day”

ᛟ    *ōþalą /ɔːθɑlɑ̃/ OR *ōþilą /ɔːθilɑ̃/ “ancestral home”

if you would like more in-depth explanations for each of these, HERE is a good source (where we differ, i’d note that this source leans heavily on the Norse variants because our oldest attested uses come from Proto-Norse)

Are You Cursed?

Protection from Curses

Decoys

(a decoy acts as a “substitute” for you, which the curse will be redirected to instead of harming you; the decoy can then be cleansed or destroyed to remove the curse from it; sometimes you don’t get a choice and the decoy gets destroyed, and you have to make a new one if you still desire its protection)

Tattoo

justins-galdrastafir:

aloha,
im a tattoo artist from Hawaii and im now visiting ICELAND and have been road tripping around the island being blown away by the magic.
I came across your website and decided again to try and reach out to someone and connect in getting a tattoo while im here..

I reached out Habba Nero as we have some like minded friends in common but she is to busy this week.. I leave early Friday morning so at the latest it would have to be thursday the 14th..

Im very interested in getting a symbol which represents to listen to your heart, find your path follow your heart and dreams and or go in the direction of your dreams , understand your dreams..

Could you recommend a symbol or an artist I could possible work with here ?
I know this is short notice so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much for your time.. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello Rachel

Most people finding out about Icelandic magic staves go with Vegvisir, which is about not losing your way in storms and thus derive a meaning of staying on the right path. Its not an exact match and I presume you decided against that one.

There are a number of staves called Draumstafir to “dream what you want”, a literal translation which could be interpreted to mean pursuing your dreams. They often are small and non-symmetrical.

However I’m going to think outside the box and rely a bit on intuition.

This symbol is called Lifsstafurinn, which means “Stave of Life”. Graphically enhanced it would look rather good as well as being deeply meaningful. The words under the symbol are a description of a bloody ritual however it involves only your own blood so getting this as a tattoo I believe fulfils the blood sacrifice element.

The only graphic artist I know that does Galdrastafir in a style tailored for tattooing is me. I have a bunch of jobs on the go but as I’m waiting on replies I could probably fit you in tomorrow or Wednesday.

If you want more about Draumstafir, Vegvisir or Lifsstafurinn, or any other information, prices, etc., please email me on galdrastafir.sigils@gmail.com

Hell yeah, let’s talk about magic.

Like elementary kids learning silly (or inappropriate) charms from each other on the bus, the same way we learned our first swear words. Clapping games across the bus aisle, but with spells instead of rhymes.

Worrying that your friend is getting into dark magic, but not knowing how to talk to them about it. Intervention programs for kids abusing hexes and runes, because magic has given them control over something for once in their life, and they’re starting to make some dangerous choices.

Psychic teachers knowing when you’re cheating. Knowing when you’re having trouble with homework. Or at home. Knowing when you need tutoring or an AP course because you’re just not being challenged or a different teaching method because you can’t process what you’re learning in class no matter how hard you try, and the teacher tells you it’s okay, they know. They know.

Magic graffiti. Graffiti in wild places, and graffiti that vanishes when certain people roll by like the police. Or graffiti that only appears when the police walk by to insult them. Murals. Swirling, living murals on the sides of buildings. Murals that–if you listen closely–can be heard, not just seen.

Why Yule Needs to Stay Creepy

deerhoofandrabbitsfoot:

“…There’ll be scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Christmases long, long ago…”

So I have been thinking about our Contemporary conceptualization of the Christmas season a lot lately and it’s kind of interesting. So many things we associate with Christmas – Christmas trees, greeting cards, Santa Claus, his reindeer and elves, gift-giving in general – all of these things came into vogue in the 19th Century and are very sticky-sweet, in my opinion. They’re lovely, but not filling. If we just scratch the surface of the Christmas we know and love and peek back into its history, we find something much meatier.

Before the cheerful Christmas tree, a number of other plants were associated with Christmas. The holly, associated with sacrifice and the blood of Christ, and the parasitic mistletoe, associated with the death of Baldur in Norse mythology – these were the plants associated with Christmas before the Christmas tree became the standard.

Also, the Yule log. The Yule log, meant to provide light on the darkest night of the year, was a magic charm in and of itself. If it did not burn through the night, it would be a terrible omen. By watching the fire and coals of the Yule log, one could also predict who would give birth and who would die in the coming year.

When our simple Santa Claus is reduced to his predecessors, one is left with Odin, ancient Norse God of battle, Saint Nicholas, the canonized former bishop of Turkey, and Father Christmas, the hard-drinking gluttonous representation of holiday merriment. And all of them brought ghastly friends – Odin, the spirits of the Wild Hunt and Saint Nicholas, his helpers (including Knecht Rupert, Krampus, etc.). Father Christmas, more of a personification of the season than a night visitor, undoubtedly brought many hangovers.

Before stories about reindeer, snowmen, or things of that ilk, there were ghost stories. Charles Dickens did not invent the Christmas ghost story in “A Christmas Carol,” but popularized an already-existing folkloric trend. If we look to the old tales of Christmas, we find stories about witches that rode the night air, cursing the birth of the Savior. There are stories about fairies, ghosts, and Devils that wreak havoc, frightening livestock and damaging property. In an era before television or radio, homemade storytelling was one of the primary forms of entertainment. And winter was the storytelling season.

You also have mumming, wassailing, and caroling – dressing up in colorful costumes and (sometimes drunkenly) begging for money door-to-door. As John Grossman notes in his book “Christmas Curiosities,” Christmas before the Contemporary Period resembles our Halloween more than it resembles the Christmas we know now.

Let us not forget, those of us who acknowledge the Wheel of the Year, that the season of darkness extends from Halloween to Christmas. This darkness only begins to fade when we gain back the Sun at the Winter Solstice. From Halloween to Christmas, the dead may roam the Earth and weird things may happen. In his classic “Mastering Witchcraft,” Paul Huson notes that Yule is not a time for pleasant spell work, but cursing! It is a time of dark magic and mystery. And we need this time. To understand the light, we must understand the darkness – the witches, ghosts, and Devils of the old Yuletide. Like the trees that go dormant, we must embrace the darkness of winter to grow and thrive.

Death Witchcraft FAQ + Masterpost

death-witch-envy:

I realize that others have written up posts on death witchcraft, but I decided to write one as resources on this craft are scarce and I know many are curious. Note that every witch practices the craft differently, and for different reasons; these are just my personal experiences based on myself and the death witches I’ve spoken to.

What is death witchcraft?

I personally define death witchcraft as using death to empower you rather than dishearten you. I reflect a lot upon the concept of death, come to terms with my own death, and work through spiritual “deaths” in my life, such as the death of friends or jobs of an aspect of my personality. Death witches work with and honor spirits of the dead (ghosts, ancestors) as well as the power of death itself (endings, resurrections). I embrace death as a new beginning, and a pivotal point in the cycle of life.

Does this answer sound familiar? Because I’ve said it before, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here. I get this question a lot, you see, which is why I’m making a post about it. (⌒_⌒)

Why do you do it?

As with many paths, every witch does it for different reasons. For some, it’s a fear, or similar fascination, with death and its inevitability. Some practice it to find peace with death, and the dead. Some combine it with chthonic worship. And some just think it’s cool shit. No matter the reason, death witchcraft is one of the more emotionally tolling and obscure crafts out there. So if you’re interested, be prepared to commit.

What do you do in the craft?

A lot of spirit work, mainly caring for the dead. Ways I do this include tending to graveyards, giving offerings to the dead, helping the dead pass on, and helping people through mourning. I do a lot of shadow work, where I face my fears about death and the “deaths” in my life, and come to terms with accepting it. I also honor ancestors, honor different cultures’ funeral rites, and necromancy.

Other witches combine the craft with vulture culture, or becoming a mortician or funerary holder. I personally do not.

What is necromancy?

Necromancy is divination through the dead. Basically–talking to the dead to receive insights into the present or future. Necromancy can be performed in many different ways, including but not limited to summonings, bone throwing, pendulum readings, and other rituals. No, there’s no reanimating of the dead; many necromancers are strictly against that, if it is at all possible.

Some necromancers are death witches; some are not. I know many death witches who incorporate divination into their path, but would not call it necromancy. The lines seem to be blurred here. But because I receive so many questions on it, I figured I’d include it in the FAQ.

Is death witchcraft religious?

Well, uh … yes and no. Considering how much work death witches do with the spirits of a dead, a general belief in the afterlife is common among death witches. However, I do know some death witches who engage in past life work as an aspect of their craft instead of working with ghosts. Death witchcraft has the capability of neatly fitting into most kinds of religious belief, if necessary.

Is death witchcraft a “dark” path?

No. In my opinion, at least, no. The only thing “dark” about death witchcraft is that it involves, well, death, an idea which many people are uncomfortable with. And it can be a hard and draining path. But, dark? Or unethical? Not at all.

Are there any rules to death witchcraft?

The only rule I can think of that I would ever even think to enforce is to respect both the dead and the living. The dead are not your slaves, they’re not there to give you power; they’re just as valuable as we are. Respect them, and they’ll respect you.

I’m interested! How can I get started?

starlilium:

Personal astrology rules I have followed for myself to reach the three goals of self-love, acceptance and awareness

(1) *Once you come to learn and appreciate all of the archetypes, you’ll see the beauty in every placement*

(2) *By seeing the beauty in every placement, you will no longer be pessimistic about your own placements or judge others by theirs*

(3) *You will see that all of the archetypes reside within you. By hating any of them you are simply loathing those parts of yourself and must confront those issues to resolve them, otherwise you sabotage your own journey to growth*

(4) *You will then understand how unique each placement, communication between placements (aspects), and position of placements (houses) are and how they come together to form individualized natal charts*

(5.1) *You will not idolize the practice of astrology under the guise of romanticizing the trinity of goals however (self-love, acceptance and awareness), and come to terms with this reality: Although each picture of the universe is special and intricate, you are not your natal chart, you are you*

(5.2) *The natal chart works through you, not you through it. To imply otherwise suggests no free will and to thus blame any flaws on the universe rather than taking responsibility for yourself, but know the astrology proverb: the stars may impel, but they do not compel; meaning the stars may influence, but it is you who makes the ultimate choice*

(6) *Always be honest with yourself. If the intent is to reach the trinity of goals only to seem like you have acquired them rather than actually acquiring them, then you must re-evaluate yourself and begin from the first rule. Otherwise, simply continue to keep these rules in mind when practicing astrology as to prevent any regressions. You are always growing.*

This is an *amazing* idea for a spell!!  Carve your intent in the soap, scrub til it’s gone.  Great for sigils and bindrunes, too, if that’s your thing!

Easy Witchy Things to do

eclectic-witch-tarot:

-Spelled bath salts in your night bath to lift mental and physical exhaustion of the day. I recommend a recipe with frankincense, geranium and rosemary in it as they aid in purification of body, spirit and soul but you can customize for your needs. You can do SOOOOO  many things in the bath. Imma do another post on this.

-Rose hip tea before bed to bring prophetic dreams.

-Rosemary/athame placed beneath the pillow to protect from nightmares and psychic attacks.

-Incense of lavender. Or a candle dressed in lavender oil. Or lavender fragrance oil on your pulse points. Whatever is more feasible to you. Lavender, promotes peaceful sleep.

-Keep a dream journal. Meditate for a few as soon as you wake up and record everything you recall in the journal for reflection.

-Do a card pull for the day ahead. Tarot or oracle. Your choice.

-Brew tea in the morning. I like green tea. Its simple. Its available. Most importantly, its cheap.

-The house you live in is an entity too. Clean it up a little. It can be something as simple as vacuuming, floorwash, dusting windows, changing curtains, letting in some sun, hanging wind chimes, vastu or feng shui, sprinkling infused water, smudging…..you get it.

-Water your plants. Talk to them. Sing to them. See if anyone is sick and needs attention. Plants like that. Bond with your plants and they will aid you more.

-I like to shower in the morning  (I’m Indian and terrified of my mother. Also. Hygiene.) Visualize the water infusing you with its flow and clarity to help you flow and be clearheaded throughout the day.

-Eat breakfast with intention. You are what you eat. Do not put trash in your tummy. It messes with your frequency. I like to stick to apples and milk/coffee.

-Wear clothes with intention too. Colors are a massive force in our lives and aid in our purpose. Wear red for passion, confidence, sensuality and resoluteness. I like to wear at least one red item everyday.

-Nail polish, if that’s something you’re into. You can incorporate color magic by doing this too if you do not wish to wear colored attire or if its not your style.

-Put a fragrance oil/itr (pronounce:EEH-tr) on you with. I like to put jasmine on me. It corresponds with divination, sensuality, confidence and luxury.

-Jewellery. Period. Rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets, anklets…intention people. Intention is your best friend. For my broom-closeted witches, this is an excellent way to mask your crystals in plain sight. Crystals are pretty and jewellery goes unsuspected. Amethyst ring? Lapis studs? Pearl bracelet? Obsidian pendant? Crystal magic!!!

-Enchant your makeup if you use any.

-Put pre-energized yantras/glyphs on the inside of your laptop bag/school bag/work bag to promote clarity and fluidity in work.

-Enchant your pens/brushes/pencils/tools of trade for productivity and efficiency.

-Carry snacks with you. Dried drupes, berries and fruits are fulfilling and keep you in touch with earth. Also, cuz they’re snacks.

-Eat your food.

-When you get back home, shed you’re clothing and visualize all the weight of the day going with it.

-I like to have a post-work day shower too. Again, visualize the water carrying away your woes with it.

-Brew your post-work tea. Chai is a very good option. I brew it in milk and add a host of powders/roots to it. Nutmeg, cinnamon, mace, grated ginger and cardamom are my favorites in any season. They promote positivity, good energy, relaxation, healing and peace.

-Listen to your favorite music.

-Do something artistic. Maybe paint, sculpt, write, sing out loud, freestyle….whatever you like.

-Read and research. I like to update by grimoire everyday. I, like many other witches, believe that my grimoire is a living entity and needs attention in order to flourish. You don’t have to do a lot. Just research for a couple minutes and write down your notes in it. It don’t have to be fancy.

-Bathe

-Tea! Again!

-Incense

-Sleep my little birdie.
